Angel Amaro is a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Program Clinician at Compass Behavioral Health as of June 2019.  He is a recent graduate of Columbia University’s School of Social Work (CSSW) and was intensively trained in Dr. Andre Ivanoff’s Dialectical Behavior Therapy Training Lab at CSSW.

Throughout his time at CSSW, Angel provided case management assistance services to older adults, primarily from the Latinx communities, as a first-year intern.  In his role as a DBT Family therapist intern his second-year, Angel assisted in reunifying foster care youth with their caregivers using DBT as the primary intervention model and engaged youth in individual and family therapy sessions, co-led skills groups, participated in two consultation teams, and also was available for phone coaching when needed.

In May 2018, Angel also joined New York University’s Youth and Young Adult Mental Health Group at the New York University’s Silver School of Social Work led by Dr. Michelle Munson.  Angel contributed as a research assistant and entered clinical interview data into SPSS Statistics and also assisted in analyzing data for two articles that are currently under review.

Prior to his academic time at Columbia and NYU, Angel worked for over nine years at a non-profit organization in Santa Monica assisting adults and older adults whom struggled with homelessness and were diagnosed with a mental illness.  At this agency, Angel began his career in the social work field as a receptionist/data entry person and was promptly promoted to money manager.  Through hard work and dedication, Angel became a Senior Money Manager supervising employees and managing the social security benefits of over 100 clients throughout the Santa Monica area.
